EMPATHEAST - EMPATHY DRIVEN SOCIAL CHANGE AND OPEN EDUCATION IN EASTERN EUROPE - 2014
Program

Topic: Thinking global, acting local - a CSA initiative building up regional supply structures.
Simon Scholl is a co-founder of the Kartoffelkombinat - a registered cooperative, which adopts the concept of community supported agriculture. The project started in 2012 and supplies at this stage about 550 families in Munich with fresh, locally and organically grown vegetables on a weekly base. It represents the biggest CSA project in Germany.

Topic: Yes we can – The power of community-led action
Climate change, volatile energy prices, economic and financial crisis - the challenges of our époque are diverse. One way of dealing with them is to wait – wait until governments take appropriate measures and things start getting better. But why not do something ourselves? Here and now! In various countries across the world citizens are getting organised with community-led actions not only to stem against climate change but to auto-organise community life, create new livelihoods and use the occasion to imagine actively how a desirable local future may look like.

Topic: Sustainable Meaningful Education
Guus is a former teacher and principal, author of the book ‘De Kunst van het Denken’ (The Art of Thinking). Since 2004 he has been working as an independent entrepreneur and is specialised in innovation in education and organisational development.

Topic: Connecting the dots: solidarity economy, fair trade, ethical finance. Changing how we produce, consume and use money.
Jason is an activist for social justice, ethical finance and communication rights, Jason Nardi is a coordinator of the Social Watch Italian Coalition and speaker for the CRIS- Communication Rights Campaign in Italy, as well as member of the RIPESS Europe coordination committee. He has worked for several civil society organizations, among which the Fondazione culturale responsabilità etica (the cultural foundation of the Italian Ethical Bank).

Topic: Dialogue in the Dark–an exhibition and workshop to explore the unseen
The concept of Dialogue in the Dark is simple and develops empathy: visitors are led by blind guides in groups through specially constructed dark rooms in which scent, sound, wind, temperature and texture convey the characteristics of daily environments–for example a park, a city, a bar. A reversal of roles is created: people who can see are taken out of their familiar environment. Blind people provide them with security and a sense of orientation by transmitting to them a world without pictures. The tour itself lasts for about one hour but the effects can last a lifetime. The concept has been proved as quite effective. Over the last twenty-five years Dialogue in the Dark has been presented in 38countries and 130 cities throughout the world. More than seven million visitors worldwide have experienced it and thousands of blind guides and facilitators have been empowered through employment at Dialogue in the Dark.

Topic: SE in Europe outside Europe: Why social entrepreneurship is important, can it work in the Balkans, and what we do in Serbia?
Neven Marinovic is executive director of Smart Kolektiv, a Belgrade based organization known for its work in the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility, social campaigning and social innovation. He is also executive coordinator of the Business Leaders Forum Serbia, a CSR business network launched by 14 leading companies active in Serbia. Neven has been active in the promotion and development of social entrepreneurship in the country through various initiatives including the establishment and support to various social enterprises such as the Good Bag social entreprise. He has also been behind different social campaigns and promoted the necessity to use communication and social marketing as a powerful tool for positive social change.

3-hour Learning Lab with Guus Geisen (in English)
The need to understand complexity is of all ages. In the past 250 years we have been trying to understand complexity from the perspective of problems and dividing the problems into parts. If you have a problem, separate the part that is not working well, change it and put it all together again. It is the machine age thinking that is based on the principles of fragmentation, uniformity and productivity. It has been very helpful for a long time but not anymore. The world has changed and our children are the leverage to create the new perspective of complexity.
What if we would look at complexity from the perspective of a living system? The key principles of a living system are interconnectedness, diversity and self-organization. So to be able to self-organize your world through diversity and interconnectedness you need to be able to use different tools to see, to think about and to act on complexity. In the process of deep learning and reflection you deeply understand complexity, develop knowledge, insights and new attitudes to be able to create your world.
To be able to create empathy driven social change we need to invest in three levels of sustainability: as a human being, as a professional and as a systems citizen. So it is about the awareness of myself (empathy driven), interconnected to the other (social) and to the world here and there and now and later (change). In this learning lab we will experience complexity, learn to use tools of systems thinking (the iceberg, the Behavior over Time Graph, the Connection Circle) to look different at complexity and embrace complexity as a leverage to deepen our learning.

90-minute workshop with Ralph Boehlke (in English)
What does community-led action mean in the Bulgarian context? How could it look like – what kind of activities do you consider as important and realistic? How could community-led action be financed in Bulgaria?

This session might be of interest for you no matter if you are a local activist or just a curious citizen, a local government official or a social entrepreneur.

1-hour design thinking workshop with Elina Zheleva (in Bulgarian)
In this short, fast paced, practical workshop Elina Zheleva will show you how you can design better products and services for a specific group of people, in this case - the elderly.
Good design starts with good user research. This is why the focus of this workshop will be trying out various user research techniques like in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations and walking in the shoes of the elderly user. These techniques together improve your empathy and allow you to build a solution that not only solves the problem technically, but delights the elderly.

6 x 30-minute workshops with Daniela Dimitrova (in Bulgarian / English upon request)
Dialogue in the Dark is an emotionally challenging and cognitively demanding moving beyond sight experience. The workshops in darkness help test one’s limits leading to a tangible experience of combining emotional intelligence and social competence. This inspiring experience brings about dramatic insights for professional leaders in their everyday routines, especially focusing on skills to improve communication, trust, empathy, leadership, team building and acceptance of diversity. Our facilitators, themselves blind, are experts and create a learning atmosphere of authenticity, empathy and openness. Our workshops for social and emotional learning can be an important contribution to personality development, while enhancing human interaction and mutual understanding and thereby confirming the philosopher Martin Buber’s famous observation, stating that: “The only way to learn is by encounter.”

2-hour workshop with Agota Ruzsa (in English)
This workshop is based on D-Bohm’s approach about understanding of the quantum space and the role of humans in a generative, co-creative presence with the consciousness that offers the ’fertile’ soil for our culture and bevhaviour. Thus to change our behaviour and culture, the direct path is to tap into this generative field. Deep and Integrated group dialogues offer an opportunity for this process to unfold and there we may move into this ’alchemical oven’ of the heart where all that is unneccessary for life, for creation, self-sustaining resilience and reaching out towards the environment burns away.
The beauty of the deep dialogue process is that it taps into the source of life, thus brings resources to the surface for us to ’utilize’ in creativity, innovation and collective, compassionate actions.
In the workshop we will have some opportunity to go deeper int he experience and the understanding of this approach.
Bohmean dialogue has become the foundation of many participative, hosting practices where groups are turning to oneanother in an intention of co-cretion and bridging differences, deepening compassion and enhancing shared understanding in conflicting issues, or differences of mindsets…

In time of crisis arises a special need of rethinking and reorganizing our environment in order to meet the social needs and deficits which are visible under the weakened system of governance. These social deficits can be filled and that is why the Ideas Factory started working on EMPATHEAST: Forum for Social Change and Open Education in Eastern Europe. The main objective of EMPATHEAST to firmly put Bulgaria and the Balkans on the world map of social innovation and social entrepreneurship. As a region which deals with a dysfunctional political, economic and social system on a daily basis, the Balkans are a unique ground where social innovation can solve old challenges in a new way.
For three days from November 14th until November 16th EMPATHEAST will gather together leading lectors and practitioners in the field of social change in order to create a space in which we will learn from each other, experiment with creating new models and celebrate the availability of approaches such as Design Thinking and Art of Hosting in a non-conference format. During the Forum, Plovdiv will become the setting in which seemingly foreign subjects will be transformed into pleasant and accessible starting points for reflection. EMPATHEAST will challenge your creativity for social change through lectures, installations, games, concerts and performances, stimulating collective intelligence and systems thinking. It will demonstrate the meaning of "public visioning" (creating a shared vision) and will reflect on intuitive and empathic leadership, self-organizing civil systems, ethical finance, energy independence, human centered design.
EMPATHEAST will be much more than an event. Place. Process. Game.
In order to visualize it, we have prepared the EMPATHEAST code. Meet the symbols:
Innovator
Early Adopter
Challenge
Process
Collaboration
Common Good
Often the Common Good cannot reach its destination because of a Challenge standing in its way. That is why we need the Innovator, who suggests a Process and inspires the Early Adopters. During the Collaboration they realize the innovative process and overcome the Challenges so that the Common Good can reach its final destination.
EMPATHEAST meets with who think of a in a spirit of in order to overcome a and create .
In order to talk about social innovation we have to be ready to take risks. That is why EMPATHEAST starts with a brave economic experiment - the entry to the forum will be based on the principle "Pay as you wish". The meaning behind this is that everybody will be able to pay whatever amount they want after the end of the forum, thus evaluating what EMPATHEAST has given them.
COME. JOIN. CONNECT. CELEBRATE COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE. ENJOY CHANGING IT ALL.
This event is organized by the Ideas Factory Association
